Gulfstream Media Group Internships
Do you want to get a behind-the-scenes look at how a magazine is created, and discover the world of the magazine and publishing industry—all while amplifying your portfolio and résumé? If so, an internship at Gulfstream Media Group might be a perfect fit for you.
Interns work closely with editors to create content for six luxury lifestyle publications and their online counterparts, including flagship Gold Coast magazine and FortLauderdaleDaily.com.
What are the application deadlines?
For summer: March 1
For spring: Nov. 30
For fall: Aug. 15
How long do the internships run?
Internships coincide with students’ academic school years. Summer internships run from late-May to mid-August, spring internships run from January to early May, and fall internships run from late-August to December.
Who’s the ideal intern?
An ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, experience with deadlines, knowledge of South Florida and background working at a college newspaper or magazine. He or she will have strong writing skills, news judgment and knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest). Most importantly, he or she will have a passion for journalism and want to learn all about the magazine industry in a hands-on environment.
Can I apply if I already graduated?
Our internships are only open to undergraduate students who are eligible to receive college credits, and it’s important to note that this opportunity is unpaid. Commitment is targeted at 15 to 20 hours per week, and applicants should be available to spend at least two days per week in the Fort Lauderdale office.
What are some internship responsibilities?
Interns focus on all editorial aspects that are important to making a successful magazine (or in our case, six!). This includes dabbling in everything from writing and editing content for Gulfstream’s luxury lifestyle publications and websites, to helping run social media accounts and create newsletters.
Editing responsibilities include researching, fact-checking and editing for grammar and AP style. Writing responsibilities include reporting, brainstorming evergreen story ideas and producing original content for the front-of-book on topics such as beauty, fashion, food, health and events. Interns may also have the opportunity to write a profile piece or story. Web responsibilities include helping to post and promote online stories through social media.
